Poster presentation of research proposal addressing: the evaluation of dental hard tissue remineralization proximal to glass ionomer restorations. It is hypothesized that glass ionomer used in class II restorations will provide significantly more bioavailable fluoride and hard tissue remineralization on the proximal surface of adjacent teeth as compared to the same restoration completed using resin composite materials.https://dune.une.edu/cdm_studpost/1001/thumbnail.jp

Modeling Hidden Nodes Collisions in Wireless Sensor Networks: Analysis Approach

This paper studied both types of collisions. In this paper, we show that advocated solutions for coping with hidden node collisions are unsuitable for sensor networks. We model both types of collisions and derive closed-form formula giving the probability of hidden and visible node collisions. To reduce these collisions, we propose two solutions. The first one based on tuning the carrier sense threshold saves a substantial amount of collisions by reducing the number of hidden nodes. The second one based on adjusting the contention window size is complementary to the first one. It reduces the probability of overlapping transmissions, which reduces both collisions due to hidden and visible nodes. We validate and evaluate the performance of these solutions through simulations

Modelling Degradation of Bioresorbable Polymeric Devices

Bioresorbable polymers, especially the homo and co-polymers of poly lactic acid (PLA) and poly glycolic acid (PGA), have been used for a broad range of applications for the last three decades owing to their biodegradable, biocompatible and non-toxic natures. One of the applications for these polymers is in the orthopaedic surgery as bone fixation device. According to the Wolff‟s law, if the bone fixation devices are overly strong to shield the healing bone from sufficient stress stimulation, the bone will resorb to an extent. Therefore the optimised design of such devices relies on the prediction of the stress redistribution between the device and the bone during the device degradation. However, the auto-catalysis nature of the polymer degradation brings extra complications to the modelling of the device degradation. Currently the time consuming trial and error approach is widely employed in the device development. In fact mathematical models and the finite element method can be a great assistance to the designing of these resorbable devices. This thesis presents a complete model for the interaction between a resorbable fixation device and a healing bone. A phenomenological model is firstly presented that can capture the main features of the polymer degradation. An important factor in this model is the effective diffusion coefficient for the oligmers which is studied subsequently. Then an entropy theory based model is presented to relate the decay of Young‟s modulus to the polymer degradation. Finally the polymer degradation model and the Young‟s modulus decay model is integrated with a bone remodelling model and stress analysis to predict the growth or decay of a healing bone that is “protected” by a bioresorbable fixation device. The work in this thesis focuses on amorphous polymers. The work is entirely computational which is guided by existing experimental data and observations in the literature

The Impact of Perceptual Attributes on Entrepreneurs’ Preferences to External Financing

    No full text
The aim of this study is to examine the implications of type of ‘discouragement’, ‘discrimination’ and ‘risk-taking’ perception in external financing preferences of the business owners from five major ethnic groups (Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Black African and Afro-Caribbean) in England. A five-point Likert-Scale questionnaire was used to collect data. Questionnaire was distributed via e-mail, post and face-to-face survey was conducted to enhance representation and sample size. Multiple regression was performed to assess the impacts of perceptual attributes on entrepreneurs’ preferences to external financing. Findings suggest that the discouragement perception has a significant impact in shaping external financing preferences particularly for other than bank financing sources. Discrimination feeling to apply for bank financing has significant implication in preferences to alternative financing. Whilst risk-taking propensity has implication in preferences to bank financing. Furthermore, this study also established the types of discouraging factor in applying for bank financing among ethnic minority business owners. The practical and theoretical implications are discussed, and future research directions are presented

Evaluating the Strategic Position of the Beibu Gulf, South China Sea

    No full text
The Beibu Gulf of the northern South China Sea occupies an important strategic position. However, administrative areas along the Chinese coastline of the gulf do not have a significant economic value. Therefore, increasing public attention and assisting the regional government are necessary for promoting development. In this study, a conceptual model comprising geographic location, economic potential, social function, and ecological service (GESE) for strategic position analysis was constructed and further extended to a system for regional strategic position evaluation (RSPES) based on regional characteristic resources and environment. The analytical hierarchy process (AHP), fuzzy evaluation, and weighted comprehensive calculation were used to effectively apply this system to the Beibu Gulf. The evaluation scores demonstrate that the Beibu Gulf strategic position is at the second importance level and the importance rankings for the four subsystems are as follows: geographic location, economic potential, ecological service, and social function. Based on this, recommendations for the further development of the Beibu Gulf have been offered. The GESE model and the RSPES are suitable for the application in other areas, particularly coastal ocean areas, and can provide support for integrated coastal management.</p

<p>Two isostructural metal–organic frameworks, [M<i>L</i>(H2O)4]n (M = Y(II) (<b>1</b>) and Nd(II) (<b>2</b>)), NaH2<i>L</i> = 5-sulfoisophthalic monosodium salt), have been synthesized by hydrothermal reactions. Each metal is nine-coordinate with a distorted tricapped trigonal prismatic arrangement. <i>L</i>3− is a ÎŒ3 bridge to generate a homometallic 2-D noninterpenetrating (6,3) honeycomb-like topological network structure. The luminescence spectra indicate emission maxima at 406 and 402 nm, respectively. Compounds <b>1</b> and <b>2</b> show second-harmonic generation responses that are 0.5 and 0.8 times that of urea, respectively.</p
